at nationals on april 8th at copper mtn in colorado, tyler was rushing down the mountain to get up to the top of the course to take his slopestyle run. nobody really knows the details but we know he somehow slammed his head into a tree and back into a rock at a really high speed. he was found unconscious and seizuring against a tree. he hit so hard his entire heelside edge of his board is shattered and his bindings broke. his helmet shattered and there was tree bark in his hair. tyler suffered massive injuries and was airlifted to denver hospital. he had compression fractures in his cervical vertebrae 4,5 and 6, (which were later determined to have been caused by a previous accident) a major concussion, severe head trauma including bleeding of the brain, abrasions to the left arm, a broken scapula and a bruised lung. he is back in connecticut as of a few hours ago today, and his recovery time is 6 months-1 year but at least they expect him to make full recovery. boy was it scary..the helicopter pilot visited him yesteray and told him how lucky he is to be alive. however..there is good that came from this. he won halfpipe the day before, allowing him to at least claim the national champion title in one divison. he was going into slope in 1st place..but shit happens.
the other truly good thing that came from this was the tremendous amount of support seen from around the world. thursday morning at 4am i created a facebook group called prayers and good vibes for tyler. by 10am thursday nearly 200 people had joined. currently there are 956 members. his caring bridge website has had over 2200 visits. we have had phone calls, emails, wall posts and just tons and tons of support. it has been just entirely touching and overwhemling. tyler even said..i dont care this happened because what has come out of it is amazing. i can't believe so many people out there care. i honestly know he is a changed person. we are all just glad he is alive and on the road to recovery. i cant believe how many caring people are out there.
